This site is my personal project in which I endeavor to document and share my journey to acheive, and maintain, optimal health and fitness; with the goal of maximizing both lifespan and healthspan.
This is a work in progress. I update this site periodically in my spare time.
What Defines Overall Health
I consider overall health to be a measurement of two primary components. It's important to define these components, and distinctions between them:
- Metabolic health - The absence of metabolic syndromes, or markers associated with metabolic syndromes; typically identified by:
- Excess adipose tissue (abdominal fat)
- Excess visceral (organ) fat, especially involving the liver
- High triglyceride levels
- High fasting blood glucose
- High blood pressure
- Triglyceride-to-HDL cholesterol ratios higher than 2.0
- Physical fitness - The measure of the body's ability to perform physical work over a duration of time, using the following metrics:
- Muscle mass
- Muscle strength
- Cardiovascular capacity
- Cardiovascular endurance
Achieving a high level of overall health requires one to maintain both good metabolic health and physical fitness. Of the two, I consider metabolic health to be the most important, but also consider both to be essential in achieving optimal lifespan and healthspan.
Tenets Underpinning Overall Health
I have defined five tenets I consider to be most impactful in achieving the highest overall health outcomes:
