lectins

Lectins are defined as proteins that bind to carbohydrates. Plants produce chemical compounds, including lectins, to repel microorganisms, insects, and other pests. Negative side effects can include; red blood cell clumping, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach upset, and diarrhea. Lectins can cause problems during human digestion, because they resist being broken down in the gut.  Active lectins can interfere with the absorption of minerals, especially calcium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc. Lectin proteins bind to cells for long periods of time, and can cause an autoimmune response, resulting in inflammatory conditions.
